There are three aspects to this book. The first is PACE. PACE is a system of conditioning the heart by stressing it and then letting it recover. This is done four to six times. I think that this is an excellent way to exercise. When he says it takes 12 minutes that is just the stress part of the training. The recovery between stress periods takes much longer so the entire workout takes much longer.

The science behind this book is pretty solid and is not some new controversial fad. I was given this book by a friend who kept telling me that long distance running was actually making me fatter, I was skeptical.

Having run marathons and done quite well, I was looking for something more. I decided the next step was to tackle some 50 mile runs and some that are much further. As I trimmed out my track workouts and hill repeats, to add in more distance, I found that I was gaining weight while running more miles each week. Most of my runs consisted of no less than 10 miles at a pace of about 7:00/mile. My longer runs were a bit slower at 23 miles over about a 3.5/4 hour period. My diet changed little, but I was gaining weight and specifically belly fat.

In Sears’ book, we discover we don’t need cardio, aerobics or weightlifting. He tells us that our society is overweight and out of shape and that these activities only make our problems worse.

I was interested to discover that Sears offers a great way to help yourself avoid a heart attack or stroke. He says that those events can happen when a person is under sudden stress or something happens to cause the heart to beat faster than normal. For example, you’ve heard of the person who had a heart attack upon hearing of the death of a loved one or perhaps after shoveling snow.

I’m not one for the gym, the whole lycra thing leaves me wondering if the gym environment is fashion driven.

I was reluctant at first to even try the Pace Program as there is just so much hype around regarding getting fit and losing weight and I had one of those ‘here we go again moments’. What appealed to me most at the time is the way the creator of the Program ‘Dr Al Sears’ spoke about his program and it just made plain sense to me.

Most of us grew up either taking aerobics classes or working out along to a DVD at home. We have spent hundreds of hours on aerobic steps, doing dance aerobics, water aerobics, or jogging and running. You might think that a society full of people who are working out like this would be in great shape, but the opposite is true. American people have never been as fat and as out of shape as they are right now.

Depending on what statistics you look at, between one quarter and one third of the American public is obese. These are frightening numbers that have changed significantly over the past three decades. When a friend of mine told me about the Pace Fitness Program, I will admit that I was pretty skeptical. She told me about it because she had gone through the program and followed its advice to the β€œT” and was pleased with the results. More than that, though, the program pointed out that regular cardio exercise, like what you get with distance running, is actually pretty bad for your heart and lungs. She was concerned about me because I had been a distance runner for years.

I have had asthma all of my life, but when I hit my 60s, it got incredibly hard to breathe. Nothing really helped. The medicines didn’t work well, and I was left with that asthmatic cough as I tried to catch my breath but just couldn’t. This was my everyday life. So I decided to try out the Dr. Sears Pace Program. A friend recommended it to me, and I thought that it couldn’t possibly hurt at this point.
